About A Holy Start
A Holy Start is a quiet place to begin with Scripture, be still with God, and tend what matters.
It was created for anyone who wants to build a daily rhythm of meeting with God, or finding their way back to one.
Sometimes we are beginning for the first time.
Sometimes a rhythm that once came naturally has been crowded out by work, family, responsibilities, distraction, grief, change, or simply a different season of life.
A Holy Start is a place to begin again.
Why It Exists
I created A Holy Start because I needed it myself.
As a wife, mom, teacher, performer, creator, and person carrying a very full life, I knew how much I needed time with God. But I had gotten out of the rhythm of simply being still with Him.
And when I tried to rebuild it, everything felt scattered.
Scripture in one place.
A journal somewhere else.
My calendar in another.
A phone full of distractions underneath all of it.
I kept thinking, There has to be a gentler way to begin.
So I started building the place I wanted to open first.
Begin With Scripture. Tend What Matters.
Every day in A Holy Start begins with Scripture.
From there, you are invited to slow down, reflect, pray, write, listen, and then turn toward the life in front of you.
The language of tending is intentional.
We tend gardens. We tend relationships. We tend our homes, our work, our bodies, our souls, and the things entrusted to our care.
Tending requires attention, but it also recognizes that growth cannot always be hurried.
Some seasons are fruitful.
Some require pruning.
Some simply need rest.
There is room for all of them here.
A Rhythm, Not a Requirement
A Holy Start is not meant to become another obligation or another app you feel guilty for not opening.
It is simply a structure that can help you practice showing up.
Maybe that means spending ten quiet minutes here each morning.
Maybe it helps you rediscover prayer.
Maybe it gives you a way back into Scripture after a long absence.
And maybe one day you stop opening A Holy Start because you’ve found yourself sitting again with a well-worn Bible, a journal, and God.
I would consider that a success.
The goal has never been to make A Holy Start the destination.
The hope is that it continually points beyond itself toward Him.
Scripture Comes First
Scripture is the foundation of A Holy Start.
Daily passages are selected intentionally, translations are identified, and the reflections and rhythms throughout the experience are designed to direct your attention back to God’s Word rather than replace it.
A Holy Start is shaped by my Christian faith and understanding of Scripture. If you would like to understand more about the beliefs behind what I create, you can read my personal statement of faith.
You do not need to share or affirm those beliefs to use A Holy Start or to feel welcome here.
Begin Again
You don’t need a perfect morning routine.
You don’t need an hour of uninterrupted silence.
You don’t need to have your spiritual life figured out before you begin.
Come as you are.
Be still.
Open the Word.
Begin again.
Begin with Scripture. Tend what matters.
Rested. Connected. Fruitful.
A Holy Start was created by Liz Byler Shea through Moxie & Mac, LLC, with the guidance and generous feedback of wise and talented friends who also longed for a sacred rhythm gathered in one place.
McKayla, Brandon, Jenny, Chris, and Jen, thank you for your invaluable insight, encouragement, honesty, and time. A Holy Start is better because you helped shape it.
